Brushing up on brushing technique

Brushing your teeth is the most basic of all oral hygiene habits. Perhaps just as important as brushing your teeth is brushing them correctly. Here are some tips!

At least 2 minutes twice a day

You should be brushing your teeth twice every day and spending at least two minutes each time. It'll take you that long to brushing everywhere you need to, so if you're doing it right, you don't need to set a timer...you'll know.

Inside, outside and chewing surfaces

An easy way remember is the acronym CIAO (Chewing, Inside and Outside). Make sure you get all parts of your teeth when brushing, not just the outside where people will see. Get all three sides of every tooth, even the molars that are way in the back and hard to reach!

Gentle strokes in a circular motion

Just brushing up and down or side to side is easy to do and it looks great in a cartoon, but it's not a very good way to clean those teeth! Using a circular motion and using gentle strokes is the best way to clean your teeth and keep from damaging your gums!

Replace toothbrush often

Toothbrushes have come a long way in the last 100 years. Still, your bristles will wear out! Once they start sticking out to the side, they're not doing their job anymore. Besides, unless you have professional sterilization equipment in your house, trust us, you're going to want a new brush regularly.

Soft bristles and sized to fit your mouth

Enamel is the hard substance covering your teeth, protecting them from cavities. In fact, it's the hardest substance in your whole body. Still, though, it can be worn away and once it's gone, it doesn't regenerate or grow back. Your gums are as soft as your enamel is hard and stiff bristles are good for neither one, so do them both a favor and stick with the softer bristles.

Remember back with we told you to brush all the different surfaces of your back molars? That's not very easy if your toothbrush is way too big for your mouth! Make sure you choose one that fits the size and shape of your mouth to make it easy to brush everywhere!

Follow this advice and say CIAO  to bad oral hygiene habits!
